🏒 Shooting Blanks 12, Sweater Puppies 4
The Puppies came out flying, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first minute like they had just discovered how to play hockey. Braxton Jester opened the scoring and then fed Logan Buch for another, and for about 45 seconds it looked like the Puppies were about to have themselves a night.
Then reality hit. 😂 Shooting Blanks proceeded to score 12 of the next 14 goals, turning the game from a promising start into a full-blown Puppies daycare disaster. Christian Wenger, Andrew Walter, Drake Brown, and Robbie Schaeffer were running the show while the Puppies' defense appeared to be operating on a “you guys got this, I'm gonna grab a beer”system.
And speaking of beer… the Puppies may have had a little too much liquid courage and not quite enough liquid effort. 🍻 They had plenty of beers, but apparently forgot to order goals and defense with the round. By the third period, the only thing getting blocked consistently was probably the view of the scoreboard by somebody holding a drink.
Braxton Jester still deserves his flowers with three goals, while Logan Buch chipped in a goal and an assist, but there wasn't enough offense—or defensive interest—to keep up with Blanks.
Bottom line: The Puppies had 4 goals, 12 beers' worth of confidence, and approximately 0 interest in playing defense. Shooting Blanks took advantage and turned a 2-0 Puppies lead into a 12-4 ass-whooping. Somebody tell the Puppies next week that backchecking is unfortunately not optional. 😂🍺🏒
🏒 KeppStiens Island 8, Spyderz 2
KeppStiens Island came out absolutely smoking in this one, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Spyderz could even figure out what the hell was happening. Daymond Hiester and Drake Brown each found the back of the net twice, while Chase Skrillex added two of his own as Kepp Island completely controlled the first two periods.
Spyderz finally remembered they were allowed to score in the third, getting goals from Chad Bentz and Wes Eagelman to make it 7-2. Unfortunately, KeppStiens wasn't exactly interested in a comeback story, as Chase Skrillex buried his second of the night shortly after to put the game right back on ice.
Between the pipes, Gavin Emery stood tall for KeppStiens, keeping Spyderz quiet for most of the night and shutting down the early push before the late goals. Andy Slichter had his work cut out for him on the other end, facing a KeppStiens squad that apparently decided every shot needed to be a problem.
Bottom line: KeppStiens Island handled business from start to finish. Spyderz finally showed some life late, but by then Kepp Island had already packed the bags, paid the electric bill, and was halfway off the island. 🏝️😂
Toe Dragons Storm Back Late to Knock Off Pinky and the Fruitcakes 6-5
Pinky and the Fruitcakes looked like they were going to cruise to another win, but the Toe Dragons apparently decided the game should be a little more stressful.
Pinky opened the scoring when Drake Brown found the back of the net early, but Steve Lambert answered for the Dragons. Jordan Brown then scored twice in the final six minutes of the period, with Josh Wright sneaking one in between, sending Pinky into the first intermission with a 3-2 lead.
Drake Brown added his second of the night early in the second to stretch Pinky's advantage to 4-2. The Dragons wouldn't let them run away with it, though, as Jeff Young converted on the power play late in the period to cut the deficit back to one heading into the third.
And then the third period turned into absolute chaos.
Josh Wright tied the game at four early in the frame, only for Nate Leaman to put Pinky back in front less than three minutes later. Derek Kercher answered just 16 seconds later, tying things up again at 5-5. Then, with just over five minutes remaining, Jeff Young struck again—this time off a feed from goaltender Steve Conklin—to give the Dragons their first lead of the night at 6-5.
The Dragons managed to slam the door from there, completing the comeback and handing Pinky a frustrating one-goal loss after holding the lead for most of the night.
Jeff Young was the hero for Toe Dragons with two goals and an assist, including the game-winner, while Josh Wright also had two goals. Jordan Brown led Pinky with two goals, while Drake Brown added two of his own. Nate Leaman chipped in with a goal for the Fruitcakes.
Between the pipes, Steve Conklin came up huge for the Dragons when it mattered most, while Shawn Noecker had plenty of work to do as Pinky watched a late lead disappear.
The game also had a little extra spice. Justin Glenn picked up a holding penalty, a hooking penalty, and then a 10-minute misconduct for abuse of an official. Apparently two minutes in the box wasn't enough of a conversation starter, so Justin decided to upgrade himself to the deluxe package. The Dragons, meanwhile, took advantage of the chaos and walked away with the comeback win. 🏒
Shit's and Giggles Rally Late to Stun Free Agent Squad 6-5
Free Agent Squad looked like they had this one in the bag early, but Shit's and Giggles apparently didn't get the memo.
Free Agent Squad jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Christian Wenger, Tyler Dunlap, and Trent Wargo. Shit's and Giggles finally got on the board when Brett Steffe cut the deficit to two, and Josh Buohl followed up just over a minute later to make it 3-2. Then, with less than a minute left in the second, Jeremy Leid tied it up before Jason Rozum buried another just 20 seconds later to give S&G a wild 4-3 lead heading into the third.
Free Agent Squad wasn't ready to hand it over. Christian Wenger completed his hat trick early in the third, scoring twice to put Free Agent Squad back ahead 5-4 with just under four minutes remaining. But Shit's and Giggles had one more comeback in them. Josh Buohl tied the game with just 2:34 left, and Andy Sowers completed the comeback just over a minute later, giving S&G a 6-5 lead they wouldn't surrender.
Wenger was the offensive machine for Free Agent Squad, finishing with a hat trick, while Nate Wargo had two assists and Brandon Mullin added a pair of helpers. For Shit's and Giggles, Josh Buohl led the comeback with two goals and an assist, while Brett Steffe had a goal and two assists. Jeremy Leid, Jason Rozum, and Andy Sowers each added a goal in the comeback effort.
Between the pipes, Pat Noecker helped Shit's and Giggles weather the early storm before the comeback was complete, while Andy Slichter kept Free Agent Squad in control for much of the night despite the late collapse. Slichter faced plenty of pressure as S&G turned the game around, but couldn't quite slam the door when it mattered most.
And somehow, despite 59 combined shots and 11 goals, neither team took a single penalty. The refs basically got to stand around and watch 30 minutes of chaos while collecting a paycheck. Can't say that's a bad night at the office. 🏒
